The .qtl (QuickTime Link) file extension is associated with QuickTime movie files located on a web server, and available for users to download or stream. It is the exact same format as a .mov file, and in fact, a user could download a .qtl, rename it as a .mov, and it would open and run just fine inside QuickTime Player. So why the need for another extension for the exact same file format?

I have to admit I'm no computer geek. When something goes wrong, I usually have to call someone to fix it and it costs me a lot of money. When my computer started to experience random freezes, I just used Regtask and now it works normally again.

My computer is 5 years old and runs extremely slow now. I was a bit sceptical about using Regtask, but just decided to give it a shot in the end and it worked out fantastically for me.

With the .mov file, whenever a user clicks on a link to view the movie, it is automatically opened using the browser plugin, and the movie streams within the browser window. This has some decided disadvantages such as lower video and and sound quality, stuttering, and skipping. To cause the movie to be opened in an external session of QuickTime player, developers came up with the new extension, and began programming their association tables to include a new MIME type for .qtl files. Default installations of QuickTime version 5 or later should automatically set the new associations in the computer's operating system, but if that fails to be done, the file association can be established manually. Users should consult their operating system documentation for instructions. An improper file association will not cause any damage to the computer, but it will prevent the .qtl file from being opened correctly. If you get an "unable to open file " error, make sure your file associations are set to point to QuickTime as the default player for .qtl files.

More Info Regarding File Extension Qtl
One of the inherent drawbacks of this association is the need for the browser to download the entire file to the user's hard drive. At worst, if the browser does not call up QuickTime Player until the download is complete, the suer may have to wait a significant amount of time before playing begins. At best, the player will begin operation as the file is downloading, but the entire file will still end up on the hard drive. Developers have created a work around in the form of a very small reference movie which contains just the URL of the full length version. When a user clicks the link, the reference file is downloaded and opened, and directs the QuickTime Player to the full length version which will then play without downloading. Users can set the options within QuickTime Player to download the full length file if desired.
Another drawback to the .qtl file is that it poses a security threat to unprotected computers. Due to a buffer over run the reference file can contain executable code which instructs the computer to download a virus, malware, or trojan file while completely unknown by the user. If the computer's security features (anti-virus and firewall) are not set up to monitor these types of threats, the computer's security is easily breached. Apple developers have corrected the buffer over run to limit the size of the file, but clever hackers have managed to work around this. It is suggested that users always set up their anti-virus and firewall systems to monitor .qtl and .mov files.
Since apple's .qtl files are essentially .xml text files that redirect the QuickTime Player, other media players will not open and play them on their own. If th user open the .qtl file with an .xml capable text editor he can copy the link for the full length movie and paste it into a media player that supports .mov format. Real Player supports .mov files, and users have reported being able to hack VLC, Helix, Windows Media Player, and Xine, but this has not been confirmed. Users who do not have QuickTime Player and wish to convert can use a conversion tool such as RAD Video Tools. Other available converters include OJOsoft Mov Converter, and Prism Video File Converter.
